What makes a good chat greeting
- Say what you can help with. “Questions about delivery or returns?” gets a better first message than “How can we help?”, because the visitor knows they’re in the right place.
- Be honest about who’s answering. If an AI assistant replies first, say so, and say how to reach a person.
- Set expectations when nobody’s there. An away message should give your hours and what happens to the message. Don’t promise a reply time you can’t keep.
- Keep it short. A greeting is read in a second or two. One or two sentences is plenty.
- Match your site. If your pages are formal, a jokey greeting jars. Pick the tone your customers already hear from you.
You can see these patterns at work in the annotated conversation examples, including an after-hours enquiry and a handoff to a person.
